Call to Action on the Federal Regulations

For years, we have been talking about including Interveners in the official list of Related Services in IDEA.  We now have an opportunity to do this!  The U.S. Department of Education is inviting comments regarding their regulations.  The June 22, 2017 Federal Register contains a request for comments, In accordance with Executive Order 13777, ‘‘Enforcing the Regulatory Reform Agenda”, signed by President Trump February 24, 2017.  The Department of Education is now seeking input on regulations that “may be appropriate for repeal, replacement, or modification.”  This is our opportunity to send in comments to modify the Related Services regulation by adding Intervener Services to that list (“CFR Title 34, Subtitle III, Chapter III, Part 300, Subpart A, §300.34 Related Service).

An opportunity like this, to affect the regulations, is rare, and your comments are very important!

The due date for these comments is September 20, 2017, so immediate action is needed!!

  1. Go to: This link provides directions on how to comment.
  2. In the search box found in ““, enter:  ED-2017-OS-0074
  3. You will see:  Evaluation of Existing Regulations with a dark blue “Comment Now!” box.  Click on the Comment box and write your comment.
  4. First use the CITATION “CFR Title 34, Subtitle III, Chapter III, Part 300, Subpart A, §300.34 Related Services
  5. Next, make YOUR COMMENT.  You can say simply “I request a modification of the regulations to include Intervener Services on the list of Related Services”.  Or you can use any wording you feel is best.
  6. Finally, you need to include a reason, using your own words and experiences, as to why this change is important to the needs of your child or of children who are deafblind in general.

Please Note: Click here for an example of specific wording for modifying the regulations (listed under A), and we’ve listed some possible reasons for modifying the regulations (listed under B).  Feel free to use any of this wording as needed, but remember your heartfelt and personal comments are what are most important.

We’re very excited to have this opportunity to impact the regulations, and encourage you to join us in this effort!  Together we are better!

Please share! Thank you!
